Editorial Reviews:

You Need A Budget (YNAB) Pro cuts to the chase with your finances. The software focuses you on the foundation of your finances: the Budget. Experience has shown that when your budget is intact, and functioning correctly, everything else takes care of itself (the bills are paid on time, retirement contributions are made, and unnecessary debt is eliminated). The software is built around Four Rules of Cash Flow. These Four Rules will help you maximize the value of every dollar, get out of debt, save for retirement, and reach your other financial goals. Where other software packages tend to be the products of years of feature creep, YNAB Pro offers you exactly what you need: a simple, straightforward system to manage your money.

Summary: The Little Budgeting Software that Could!
Comment: I've been using YNAB for the past couple of years...way back when it was an excel program. Do I need to tell you that I love it?? I loved it then and I REALLY love it now. Jessie and Taylor have done a fantastic job of adding even more functionality yet keeping the simplicity of the program intact.

I was a die-hard Quicken user before I discovered YNAB. It did take me a while to get used to thinking ahead rather than after-the-fact, but now that thinking ahead financially is a way of life for me, the difference is incredible. I always have the money to pay my insurance IN FULL when the bill is due. (No more $4 service fees per payment!) I have a three month emergency fund in place. I know that there are people who can do this easily because it comes naturally for them. For the rest of us, YNAB provides the proof of progress in black and white and that is just what I need to keep myself on track. And, for those of you who do all that foreward-thinking naturally, you'll love seeing it in black and white, too.

I heartily recommend YNAB. It is one program that really can help change your life.

Summary: Designed for a specific Purpose
Comment: I have been using YNAB for a little over a year now. Reading through all of the reviews that have been rated below 5, it seems to me that some of those people purchasing the software may not have a clear picture of what it does, and does not do.

I have always had a very hard time managing finances, and have never been able to handle a budget well at all. In looking for a good budgeting system, I have tried Quicken, and MS Monkey, and both of them are completely overwhelming. I have no idea how to use them, and do not have the time to learn them. One of the reviers mentioned the inability to record check numbers. As to that, each transaction has a memo field where you can enter whatever it is that you like, but it seems to me that perhaps that reviewer was one of those that did not know the purpose of this software prior to purchasing. For what this software does, there is absolutely no reason to need the check number.

The software is incredibly difficult to work with credit cards, as it does not keep track of interest rates, and payments to those cards are very difficult to manage. This is all stuff that is freely acknowledged by the creator of the software.

This software is strictly for creating a budget. However, it is more then just the software, it is an entire budgeting system, so those who atempt to simply dive in will struggle quite a bit. You need to read the entire manual on this software (It is actually a very easy read, unlike most manuals, or accounting articles), after which it all becomes very clear.

The software has a couple different versions. The cheaper version actually is simply an very complex spreadsheet, so it should be no suprise that this version looks like one.

This system basicially works by, as one commenter said, living off your last months income. While hard to accomplish, once you do, this makes life MUCH eaisier. You can not use this software to balance your checkbook, but it will balance your budget.

One of the best features of this software is that it will allow you to apply money to a specific category each month, and let that category grow. Lets say you spend 500 on Christmas gifts each year. Instead of paying out that extra 500 in December, the software makes it easy to set aside $42 per month for that expense, building until that time comes.

The software can show you an average of your monthly expense in each category, getting more accurate as time goes on obviously. This allows you to plan for unexpected expenses. Lets say your car breaks down and its 900 to get it repaired. Without a budget, this can overwhelm you easily. With this system, you may want to take certain categories and apply some additional to them each month beyond what you would normally spend. For example, the 'Transportation: Tires and Repair' category. If knowing that there are sometimes large expenses in thie category, you had set 50 a month there for the last 10 months, you will already have 500 of that ready to go. You will spend $900 in that category to repair the problem. In many systems, once you spend that 900 to repair the car, as you only had 500 in there, this would put the balance of that category at -400. This would mean that at 50 a month, it will be another 8 months before you start building up a buffer again! However, in this system, instead it will subtract that 400 from your next months total budget. Instead of making a massive adjustment in a single category, you will instead have to make smaller (though still potentially large) adjustments in many other categories the next month to make up for it, as you will have a smaller total amount of money to assign to categories for the next months budget.

This all means that you WILL build up an accumulation of money in your bank account, as items get assigned to categories in YNAB. While you set that $50 a month aside for auto repairs in YNAB, the money does not actually move, so you will accumulate that additional money in your bank account. This being the case, and this is where I was failing on this system for a while, you absolutely can not look at your bank account to see how much you can spend on that new TV, as this will destroy the budget. You need to pay attention to YNAB instead

Summary: Thank God for YNAB!
Comment: YNAB has helped me greatly. It is a budget centric money management software that uses common sense logic and processes to help you manage your money flow. I can not say enough good things about it. I have used Money and Quicken before and found the budget portions of that software to be lackluster. YNAB is still growing and needs improvements in reporting and overall features - but if you are looking for a growing, living budget software package this is for you!

Summary: Dumped MS Money for YNAB
Comment: Hats off to a great product. After years of using MS Money I made the switch to YNAB. The product is straight forward, fast and easy to understand. It doesn't try to be a lifetime financial planner advisor, be your own broker, all in one, etc., etc., a la MS Money. Plus, the user forums are great. After using it for several years I can say it gets your finances on track and I recommended it to family and friends.

Summary: best budgeting software available for taking charge of your personal finances!
Comment: If you are serious about getting in control of your finances instead of having them control you, then YNAB Pro is for you. If you're a Dave Ramsey Fan, YNAB Pro dovetails nicely with Dave's philosophy and helps you do a zero based budget that fits your needs better than any other program I've seen. The YNAB philosophy of freedom from living check to check may hold up your debt snowball for a couple of months but it's worth it for the peace of mind. If you want to track a freedom fund you can do it easily in YNAB Pro. You can keep track of account balances from savings, to checking, to retirement, to credit card and auto loans with different registers and at a glance see your net savings and debt. You can track your spending by categories. You can compare your spending month to month. What sets YNAB apart is how it helps you be accountable for your spending, encouraging spending every penny on the budget before spending it in real life, encouraging financial responsibility, and helping avoid overdrafts to accounts. The software has a broad enough application that folks who make a few hundreds of dollars a month to those who bring in tens of thousands a month can benefit. Go to the YNAB forums to learn more about people's experience with YNAB Pro. They have fantastic customer service and support services, and they are consistently seeking feedback from customers on how to improve the program. Updates are free. This software is truly life changing for people who want to reduce financial stress in their lives and reach financial peace. YNAB Pro is a terrific tool for motivated people, teaches people how to have an active, real life budget that works and gives people a key to being released from the chains of living paycheck to paycheck.

If you simply want to track spending patterns or reconcile business accounts this software may not meet your needs. If you aren't interested in changing your way of dealing with money or discovering new ways to relate to your money in a very intimate, day to day way to get your financial house in order, this is not the software for you. If you've had to make your own budget in excel because no other software fit your needs, you'll love YNAB Pro.

I tried the excel version of YNAB for Mac and had some problems but within one day I got a refund and decided to upgrade to YNAB Pro and couldn't be happier.

You can always download the trial version to check it out before purchasing, and you can try it for 60 days and get your money back if not completely satisfied.
