Using Credit Cards – The Smart Way Author: Blake C. Hendrickson
With all of the debt and bankruptcy in this world, one thing that many of us need advice on is how to be smart while using credit cards. Credit cards have been responsible for the millions of dollars in collective debt of people throughout the world. However, while it may be the direct result of credit cards, it is important to understand that credit cards alone cannot cause bad debt, misuse is the most common cause. Being smart while using credit cards is a possibility. Not only can it help in preventing massive amounts of debt, but also it can actually build your credit and eliminate debt at the same time. How can you use credit cards to your advantage? Smart usage of credit cards can only be possible if you understand that credit cards should be used as if they are one loan at a time. What do we mean by this? You should never see a credit card as your avenue of spending freedom. The smart way to do this is to pay off the balance each and every month. Of course, the only way this is possible, is if you never spend more than you can afford. If you allow a balance to roll over from one month to the next, you will certainly suffer the repercussions, such as interest charges and late fees. Once the interest starts to accrue, every payment you do make is first applied to that interest and not the principal payment, which essentially means that each month more interest will accrue, thus your principal continues to grow. Before you know it, the debt from credit cards can become unmanageable. Another way to play it smart with credit cards is to keep only necessary credit cards and use them only when absolutely necessary. Many people choose to keep at least one credit card for emergencies only. This alone can help reduce the debt you have and prevent you from creating unneeded and unnecessary debt that you really cannot afford. Playing it smart with credit cards is something we all need to do, otherwise, we find ourselves swimming in a river of debt, never knowing if we will reach the surface.
